Whether we like to admit it or not, we mere-mortals often look to celebrities for our style, fashion and beauty inspiration. In some cases, a brand only needs to be spotted on a celebrity once in public for it to immediately sell-out and become a must-have. The “Kate Effect” was the moniker famously given by the media to describe how high street pieces instantly sold out once they had been photographed on Kate Middleton.
We look up to celebs as they seem to always give off that veneer of perfection that the average woman finds it a struggle to achieve in reality. Which one of us wouldn’t immediately click on an article online which promises to let you in on “Beyonce’s Secret to her Amazing Post Baby Weight Loss” or “J-Lo looks more youthful than ever – Read on for her beauty secrets” and don’t be afraid to let us know your Top Inspiring Celebrity Alterations?
Well because we know you love to be let in on these little scoops, we are about to give you the low down on the stars best kept style secret – Garment Alterations and Restyling. Online you can read articles about how in the celebrity stylist world it’s a well-known fact that stars have almost EVERY item they are ever photographed in personally tailored for that perfect fit. (https://www.alterationsneeded.com/2012/02/why-clothing-fits-celebrities-and-not-you-lessons-learned-from-clinton-kelly.html) Stars also have the power to tweak and adjust the style of their off the runway designs as you will see below. Don’t believe us? Well we have done our homework at The Zip Yard, read on for a run-down of our favourite Celebs that count alterations among their style secrets:
America’s sweetheart always looks so effortlessly girl-next-door in jeans and t-shirts, yet somehow always a LOT more put together than your actual real-life girl-next-door, so what’s her secret, is it Celebrity Alterations? Jen actually regularly gets her t-shirts altered and even gets pockets removed from her jeans! –
“This is my secret: The trick to T-shirts is I that I usually tailor them. Which is silly, but it works. Or you just have to find the perfect one. James Perse has really great T-shirts and tank tops, Theory is great for T-shirts and basics, and for jeans, I have these Genetic jeans that they don’t even make anymore. I take the pockets off of Hudson jeans, because I like the fit, but not the pockets. Helmut Lang does a good skinny jean, too. And I wear Saint Laurent jackets.”
Kim Kardashian West
The celeb we all love to hate right now is definitely Kimmy K, thanks in no small part to her egotistical hubby Kanye but you have got to admit it MUST be hard to dress that booty! So how does she do it? We have often seen her on her reality show trying on designer clothes and discussing how she would “just get this altered” to achieve the fit she wants, and recently it came out she employs her tailor to alter everything down to her humble jeans. Well if it’s good enough for Kim!
Rose Huntington Whitely
Rosie Huntington Whitely is admired worldwide for her stunning beauty, but even she of the blessed genetics turns to a tailor from time to time to bring out her best assets. Rosie was spotted at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards in a thigh-skimming tiger print Dolce & Gabbana number. But the original design on the runway was a fishtail design and hit at calf length. I’m sure you agree Rosie’s shorter hemline infinitely improved the D&G design.
Kate is one of our favourite’s here at The Zip Yard. She often uses a tailor on her high-street finds in order to improve on them. After all a princess has to look turned out and impeccable at all times and what better way to achieve this than in personally tailored clothes. In this example below, Kate had an extra panel added to the end to increase the length of this coat as we all know Kate’s signature look is the Coat-Dress and maybe this coat was not long enough to be worn in this way. Kate had a panel added to the end in similar black wool fabric but also added a softer rounded corner to the design of the coat. Bravo Kate!
The Black-Eyed Peas front woman and popstar as we all know her is diminutive in her stature but is far from a shrinking violet. She also put her own spin on a Dolce & Gabbana design and had the hemline shortened to a daring mini-style which is ultra flattering on her smaller frame.
Courtney Smith is a well-known stylist and TV presenter on the Irish fashion scene and also an alterations aficionado and The Zip Yard customer. Last year we helped her redesign outfits for 2 weddings one of which was Glenda Gilson’s. Courtney was a big fan of the 2 piece look and so we redesigned a vintage dress into a 2 piece crop top and tea length skirt for one wedding and a gorgeous Folkster gown into a crop top and skirt eveningwear combo. For the VIP Style awards we also redesigned a Pinko dress into a high-waist flowy skirt with a sexy thigh-high split. Courtney is never afraid to buy imperfect items and get creative with them using restyling techniques to achieve a showstopping look. A girl after our own hearts!
Rozanna is one of Ireland’s top models and also comes to us in The Zip Yard when she wants a new take on an outfit. This Whistles jumpsuit in a gorgeous lavender colour was very plain on the top so we had the idea to restyle the top into a unique one shoulder design. Restyling at it’s best!
